Stamp Tribute Marks Henry Ford's 150th Birthday

Born July 30, 1863 near Detroit, Michigan, Henry Ford spent much of his childhood repairing watches and displaying a great passion for mechanics.  By 1893, while working for the Edison Illuminating Company, Ford became engrossed in experiments on gasoline engines.  He completed his first self-propelled vehicle, which he named the Quadricycle, in 1896.

Ford continued to perfect his experiments, and opened the Ford Motor Company on June 16, 1903.  Ford’s goal, to design a car that was easy to drive and repair, was achieved when he introduced the Model T on October 1, 1908.  Over the next 30 years, he sold over 15 million Model T’s and became a pioneer in the automobile industry.  Aside from his invention of the affordable automobile for the masses, Ford also introduced the assembly line in April 1913, which completely revolutionized the production industry.
