Tax Paids were among the large stock of Revenue stamps locked away for decades in the vaults of the Smithsonian National Postal Museum.  The stamps were auctioned off in 2006, and we jumped at the chance to purchase these unusual treasures for you. Most collector's didn't know that these stamps existed. They are not even listed in the Scott Catalogue. The late Sherwood Springer, a revenue stamp expert, classified them in his catalogs. 

Tax Paid Revenue Stamps have a history that goes back to the Civil War. They were affixed to containers of tobacco products and were divided into classes based on the tobacco's quality. Each class was taxed according to weight or quantity. Tax Paid stamps were issues for most of the next century.
