Botswana is a medium-sized country in southern Africa with a population just over 2 million people.  It's one of the most sparsely populated nations in the world, and much of its area is made up of the Kalahari Desert.  Botswana's postal system has been in place since 1875 and was established by the London Missionary Society.  Eventually, it became part of the Bechuanaland Protectorate Postal Services before achieving independence in 1966.

Botswana's first stamps were issued when it was part of the Bechuanaland Protectorate and were overprints.  The nation's first independent issues were issued in 1966.  Today, Botswana has a small philatelic museum in Gabarone.
