Explore a packet of 95 different Afghanistan stamps and discover a country with a visually striking and culturally rich postal tradition. These stamps reflect centuries of history, bold artwork, and a crossroads of civilizations.  It’s an exciting chance to add color, character, and global depth to your stamp collection—each piece a small window into a fascinating nation.

Selections will vary (which makes each one a fun treasure hunt), but the one I looked through had lots of neat stamps.  Some of the stamps I saw included:

  • 10th anniversary of the World Tourism Organization, picturing the ancient arch of the Qala-e Bost citadel in Helmand Province
  • Farmers Day
  • 2-6-0 Mogul antique train
  • 20th anniversary of the Intelsat satellite program – the first commercial communications satellite
  • 6th anniversary of the Saur Revolution
  • Buzkashi – national sport of Afghanistan
  • A pair of 1997 triangular early sailing ships – issued under Taliban rule, they were later declared unauthorized and illegal
  • "La Mancelle" (1878) – historic steam automobile – often considered the first automobile to be put into series production. Also issued under Taliban rule

More About Afghanistan...

As you may know, Afghanistan is a landlocked country at the crossroads of Central and South Asia.  It's bordered by Pakistan to the east and south, Iran to the west, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan to the north, and Tajikstan and China to the northeast.

The first stamps of Afghanistan (then the Kingdom of Afghanistan) were issued in 1871 and were round, imperforate, and printed in black.  Cancellation was done by cutting or tearing off a piece of the stamp, and it wasn't until 1891 that postmarks were used.  Different colored inks were used beginning in 1876, and all early issues were engraved.  Some are quite valuable today.  Round stamps came to an end in 1891, when rectangular issues were introduced.  The first rouletted stamps came about in 1907.

After gaining independence, Afghanistan issued its first independent postage stamps in August 1920.  From 1924 through the 1960s, at least one stamp was issued per year in February to commemorate independence.  Afghanistan joined the Universal Postal Union in 1928, before which any international mail had to include stamps of British India.
