Patriotic envelopes began appearing in the North even before the Civil War began. Showing support for the Union, they often pictured flags. The number of Patriotic Covers greatly increased after the South seceded from the Union. More than 300 Northern printed used woodcuts, letterpresses, and lithography to produce these Patriotic Covers. While most covers were printed on white paper, some like this one, were printed on colored paper.
