This is an 1865 Confederate States of America Loan Certificate in the amount of $1,000. Certificate measures 9 ½” x 6 ¾”. It is dated March 9, 1865, just one month before the end of the Civil War, and signed by the Register of the Treasury of the Confederate States of America.
The certificate was issued by the Confederate government as a way to raise money to continue the war. The holder was promised an additional six percent per year on the investment, and that money would not be taxed. The certificate and interest would have been “payable two years after the ratification of a treaty of peace with the United States. “
One month after this certificate was signed, it became worthless, because the Confederate Army surrendered to the Union Army on April 9, 1865.
