Issued in January 1917 as World War I raged in Europe, the Walking Liberty half dollar initially received little publicity.  Despite this, it was immediately popular and all three branches of the US Mint had trouble keeping up with the demand. 

Art historian Cornelius Vermeule said the Walking Liberty was “one of the greatest coins of the United States – if not of the world.”

• The mint mark was on the front for the first two years of production, then moved to the back later in 1917.
