Issued in January 1917 as World War I raged in Europe, the Walking Liberty half dollar initially received little publicity.  Despite this, it was immediately popular and all three branches of the US Mint had trouble keeping up with the demand. 

Art historian Cornelius Vermeule said the Walking Liberty was “one of the greatest coins of the United States – if not of the world.”  

• Struck in 90% silver
• Designed by well-known sculptor and engraver Adolph Weinman
• Pictures the goddess Liberty carrying the American flag, striving toward the rising sun with branches of laurel and oak on her arm. These are symbols of civil and military glory.
• The reverse pictures an eagle, with its talons resting on the edge of a rocky crag. Its spread wings reflect his power. 
• Production of the new coin encountered many obstacles because of the intricacies of the design.
• The mint mark was on the front for the first two years of production, then moved to the back later in 1917.
• Design remained in use until 1947, when it was replaced with the Franklin half dollar.

• Issued as the US fought through two World Wars and survived the Great Depression
