About the Coin Subjects:

James Garfield - During the Civil War, James A. Garfield served as a Union officer, rising to the rank of Major General in the Union Army.  He played a key role in the Battle of Middle Creek in Kentucky, helping secure the region for the Union which boosted Northern morale and contributed to maintaining Union control in the border states.  After the war, Garfield entered politics and eventually became the 20th President of the United States in 1881.

James Longstreet - James Longstreet was a senior Confederate general during the Civil War, serving as one of General Robert E. Lee's most trusted corps commanders.  Known for his defensive strategies and key roles in battles like Fredericksburg and Chickamauga, he had a significant impact on the Confederate war effort.  After the war, Longstreet joined the Republican Party and held various diplomatic and government posts, including US ambassador to the Ottoman Empire.

Arthur MacArthur - Arthur MacArthur served as a Union officer during the Civil War, rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel and earning the Medal of Honor for his bravery at the Battle of Missionary Ridge.  His leadership and valor contributed to key Union victories in the Western Theater of the war.  After the war, he continued his military career and eventually became the military governor of the Philippines.  He was also the father of other noteworthy US general, Douglas MacArthur.

Battle of Mansfield - The Battle of Mansfield was fought on April 8, 1864, in Louisiana.  It was a key Confederate victory during the Red River Campaign of the Civil War and was led by General Richard Taylor.  Confederate forces successfully repelled the Union Army under Major General Nathaniel P. Banks, halting the Union's advance into Texas.  This victory preserved Confederate control of western Louisiana and disrupted Union plans to divide the South further.

Battle of Mobile Bay - The Battle of Mobile Bay was fought on August 5, 1864, in Alabama.  It was an important Union victory and was led by Admiral David Farragut.  The Union overcame Confederate defenses, including Fort Morgan and the ironclad CSS Tennessee, commanded by Admiral Franklin Buchanan.  This victory sealed off one of the last major Confederate ports on the Gulf of Mexico, significantly tightening the Union blockade and contributing to the South's eventual defeat.
