About the Coin Subjects:

Battle of Tarawa - The Battle of Tarawa was fought from November 20-23, 1943, and was a brutal clash between US Marines and Japanese forces on the heavily fortified Tarawa Atoll in the Gilbert Islands.  Over 18,000 US troops faced resistance from about 4,500 entrenched Japanese defenders, resulting in heavy American casualties despite eventual victory.  The battle marked a pivotal moment in the Pacific campaign, demonstrating the high cost of amphibious assaults and shaping future US strategy in island-hopping warfare.

Battle of Saipan - The Battle of Saipan was fought from June 15 to July 9, 1944, and was a major World War II conflict in the Pacific between US forces and Japan.  American troops faced fierce resistance from Japanese soldiers and civilians, leading to heavy casualties on both sides.  The victory allowed the US to establish air bases within bombing range of Japan, marking a significant turning point in the Pacific theater.

Battle of Eniwetok - The Battle of Eniwetok was fought in February 1944 and was an amphibious assault in the Marshall islands.  American forces were led by Major General Harry Schmidt, while Japanese defenders were led by Lieutenant General Yoshimi Nishida.  After intense fighting, US troops captured the atoll, eliminating a major Japanese stronghold and securing a vital airfield.  This victory allowed the Allies to launch further operations in the Pacific, accelerating their island-hopping campaign toward Japan.

Harry W. Hill - Harry W. Hill served as vice admiral in the US Navy during World War II.  He played an important role in amphibious operations in the Pacific Theater including the invasions of Tarawa, Saipan, and Okinawa.  After the war, he went on to serve as president of the Naval War College.

Battle of Manila - The Battle of Manila was fought from February 3 to March 3, 1945.  The US faced off against Filipino and Japanese Imperial Navy forces in a conflict that resulted in the liberation of the Philippine capital, but at the cost of massive destruction and civilian casualties.  The battle marked an important step in the Allied campaign to retake the Philippines, significantly weakening Japanese control in the Pacific.
