This bronze medal honors the 450th anniversary of French explorer Jacques Cartier’s first voyage to Canada. The obverse of the coin features a portrait of Cartier. The reverse pictures his ship, “1534” ( the date of the voyage), “1984” (when the coin was issued), “450th Anniversary” and “Cartier’s first discovery voyage to Canada.” The coin was issued at the same time as joint issue stamps were released from Canada and France.
Cartier (1491-1557) was a French explorer commissioned by King Francis I of France to explore lands to the west in search of gold, spices, and a passage to Asia. He left Saint Malo, France, in April with two ships and 61 men. Arriving in North America a few weeks later, Cartier sailed along the west coast of Newfoundland, discovered Prince Edward Island, then explored the Gulf of St. Lawrence. He claimed the land for France and named it after the Huron-Iroquois word Kanata, meaning village. Cartier returned to France believing he had to Asia.
