The Vatican’s postal service began in February 1929, when the independent state came into existence.  For the first few months, the Poste Vaticane only provided services within Vatican City.  In June, the nation joined the Universal Postal Union, and services were expanded throughout Rome the next month.  Since that time, visitors to the Vatican City have sent millions of letters and postcards from the nation’s post offices and post boxes.  Stamps are produced under the authority of the Philatelic and Numismatic Office of the Vatican City State.
