with 300-Stamp Collection

This packet of 300 different Afghanistan stamps is your chance to explore this crossroads of civilization – through miniature works of art. Afghanistan’s stamps are known for their bold colors, intricate designs, and storytelling power, reflecting a country shaped by ancient trade routes, diverse cultures, and pivotal moments in global history. This kind of variety offers both discovery and depth, with every stamp revealing something unexpected.

Selections will vary, but the one I looked through included:

  • 1984 World Food stamp picturing a branch of apples
  • 27th Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union picturing Vladimir Lenin
  • World Tourism Day – pictures a camel driver and his elaborately adorned camel
  • 1984 Winter Olympics downhill skier
  • 1998 Wildlife issue picturing a tiger – issued under Taliban rule and later declared unauthorized and illegal by the post-2001 Afghan government
  • Pul-e Kheshti Mosque – 10th anniversary of World Tourism Day

Together, they create a collection that feels both worldly and deeply rooted in place. This 300-stamp packet is a sweeping visual survey of Afghanistan’s heritage, ideals, and artistic voice, making it a fascinating and rewarding addition to your worldwide stamp collection.

More About Afghanistan...

As you may know, Afghanistan is a landlocked country at the crossroads of Central and South Asia.  It's bordered by Pakistan to the east and south, Iran to the west, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan to the north, and Tajikstan and China to the northeast.

The first stamps of Afghanistan (then the Kingdom of Afghanistan) were issued in 1871 and were round in shape, imperforate, and printed in black.  Cancellation was done by cutting or tearing off a piece of the stamp, and it wasn't until 1891 that postmarks were used.  Different colored inks were used beginning in 1876, and all early issues were engraved.  Some are quite valuable today.  Round stamps came to an end in 1891, when rectangular issues were introduced.  The first rouletted stamps came about in 1907.

After gaining independence, Afghanistan issued its first independent postage stamps in August 1920.  From 1924 through the 1960s, at least one stamp was issued per year in February to commemorate independence.  Afghanistan joined the Universal Postal Union in 1928, before which any international mail had to include stamps of British India.
