In early 1923, Germany was wracked with astronomical hyperinflation.  The value of the German mark was decreasing by the day and consumer prices were increasing at an equally alarming rate.  A simple domestic letter began the year costing 20 marks to mail, and by December, the cost had risen to 50,000,000,000!  Because of this, the old values on postage stamps no longer matched up to the current economy.  However, with the value of the mark fluctuating so much, it was impossible to design and print new postage stamps with appropriate denominations.  Instead, these re-valuation overprints were created using stocks of lower denomination stamps.  These overprints range from 5,000 marks to 2,000,000 marks.

There are many varieties of Germany Hyperinflation stamps including plate, shade, and surcharge varieties as well as imperforates.  They make a fun challenge for the serious collector who wants to hunt down these varieties, or an interesting addition to a more general Germany collection.

These stamps are pieces of history you hold in your hand.  You'll enjoy owning them and sharing their story with friends and family.  Order yours today.
