Collect British Honduras —
15 Different Stamps from Britain's
Fascinating Central American Colony

For over a century, British Honduras stood apart — the only British colony on the mainland of Central America, bordered by Mexico to the north and Guatemala to the west, with the Caribbean Sea stretching to the east. Its stamps reflect that unique position: Commonwealth craftsmanship applied to tropical subjects unlike anything else in the empire.

These 15 stamps come exclusively from the British Honduras era — all issued under Queen Elizabeth II's reign, before independence transformed the colony into today's Belize.

Selections will vary, but the one I looked through included:

  • Great Curassow (Crax rubra) definitives — the striking black-crested jungle bird appears both as a standard 1c definitive and in an overprinted version commemorating the "Dedication of Site — New Capital, 9th October 1965." That overprint marks a pivotal moment: the government's decision to relocate the capital inland to Belmopan, away from flood-prone Belize City.
  • Fish and bird wildlife definitives — the Tilapia mossambica ½ cent, Grouper 3 cents, and Red-Legged Honeycreeper 2c, all from the celebrated QE II-era natural history series. Finely printed and botanically precise, these are among the most admired definitives in Caribbean philately.
  • Winston Churchill memorial 1c — Churchill's portrait against the dome of St. Paul's Cathedral enduring the London Blitz. Issued across the Commonwealth following his death in 1965, the British Honduras version is a handsome addition to any Churchill or WWII topical collection.
  • ITU Centenary, Christmas 1970, Easter flora, and Bridges of the World — four commemoratives spanning telecommunications history, devotional art, tropical botany, and Central American infrastructure, rounding out a set of remarkable variety for just 15 stamps.
