Unusual fact about this stamp: As part of the US Postal Service’s 250th anniversary celebration, it held a Stamp Encore contest, where the public voted for their favorite stamp from a list of 25. Over 500,000 votes were cast, and the Mister Rogers stamp won by a margin of over 40,000 votes.
History the stamp represents: Some television programs entertain. A rare few change the way a generation thinks about itself. Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood was one of the latter.
Fred Rogers came to children’s television in an era when children were largely invisible in adult culture. For 33 years, he welcomed young viewers into his home, changed into his cardigan and sneakers, and reminded every child who watched that they were worthy of love exactly as they were.
The world he built was carefully constructed. The Neighborhood of Make-Believe gave children a safe distance from which to examine difficult feelings. King Friday XIII, pompous and proud, taught lessons about pride and change. X the Owl celebrated curiosity. Henrietta Pussycat led with her heart. And Daniel Tiger, the most tender soul in the kingdom, showed children that even the strongest among us can feel afraid.
Rogers was also a passionate believer in the power of mail, making his selection as the winner of the Postal Service’s Stamp Encore competition especially fitting. They invited the public to vote for their favorite stamp from the past quarter century — giving one beloved issue a second life. More than 500,000 votes were cast, and Mister Rogers won by more than 40,000 — a testament to how deeply he is still loved.
