History the stamp represents: Menemsha is not easy to find, and that is part of its appeal. Tucked into the northwest shore of Martha’s Vineyard on the coast of Massachusetts, it is one of the last working fishing villages on the island — a place where lobster boats still launch at dawn and fresh seafood is eaten off paper plates on the dock. The name itself comes from an Algonquin word meaning “still waters,” a nod to the Wampanoag people who called these shores home for thousands of years before European settlers arrived.
In summer, something happens in Menemsha that has no official origin and no organized committee behind it. As the sun begins its descent over Vineyard Sound, the stretch of Atlantic Ocean that separates Martha’s Vineyard from Cape Cod. Strangers gather on the beach, spread blankets, settle in, and go quiet. The sky shifts through pink and orange and gold, the fishing boats bob in the harbor, and nobody looks at their phone. When the last sliver of sun disappears below the horizon, the crowd breaks into applause.
Nobody started this tradition. Nobody had to. A sunset is one of those gifts that never gets old. No two are exactly alike, and no one has ever watched a sunset and wished they had stayed inside.
