This U.S. stamp was overprinted for use in the Philippines during the early American administration.
The 1¢ Benjamin Franklin from the 1902–03 Series, featuring allegorical figures flanking the portrait. It's overprinted with the word "PHILIPPINES" in black, applied to U.S. stamps for use in the newly acquired territory following the Spanish-American War. It allowed the U.S. to quickly supply postage for the islands without designing and printing entirely new stamps.
Overprinted U.S. stamps were issued for the Philippines from 1899 until dedicated Philippine designs were introduced in 1906.
