Uncover the History of These Little-Known Stamps

At the beginning of the 20th century, marijuana was legal for medicinal and research purposes.  However, as the century went on, more people began using it for more than just medical necessity...  The federal government was faced with a growing recreational marijuana problem and no authority to criminalize the substance.  They had to come up with a different solution...

The “Marihuana Tax Act of 1937” required all producers, laboratories, dealers, importers, and doctors to register each year to legally buy and sell marijuana.  The annual license fee ranged from $1 to $24.  Each ounce of marijuana was taxed an additional $1 when sold to a registered individual.  Those who couldn’t meet the strict registration criteria were taxed $100 per ounce.  Failure to comply was punishable by five years in prison and a $2,000 fine.  The first tax evasion arrests were made the day after the act was passed.

Marijuana Tax stamps were valid from 1937 to 1969.  No one knows for sure how many were issued, though few were ever used.  These stamps could be even scarcer than we know!  During the 33 years Marihuana Tax stamps were valid, strict government regulations made it nearly impossible for collectors to get their hands on them.  However, some made their way into the vaults of the Smithsonian National Postal Museum.  Mystic jumped at the chance to get them at the museum’s 2005 stamp auction.  Until 2006, not even Scott Catalogue listed Marihuana Tax stamps, so few collectors knew they existed.

Be one of the lucky few to own these rare stamps and preserve their history.
