The Mir Space Station was launched by the Soviet Union in 1986. It remained in low Earth orbit for more than 15 years before it was abandoned. During that time, more than 100 crew members lived on the station and conducted research. On March 23, 2001, the station reentered earth's atmosphere and disintegrated into thousands of pieces that fell into the Pacific Ocean.
