Own Limited-Edition Discovery STS-103 Cover with Official Medal
Produced by Colorano, this covers honors STS-103 (the 96th mission of the Space Shuttle program), aboard Discovery. It features a photo of the launch and launch date postmark, along with an official medal.
Popular Colorano covers feature “silk” cachets that are produced through a special screening process and then bonded to the envelope. Each cachet pictures a photo from the mission and is surrounded by a golden border. The covers bear patriotic US stamps and cancellations relating to events from the mission.
The bonze medal pictures the mission patch. This includes an image of the Hubble Space Telescope and the space shuttle. The last names of the crew are shown around the outside of the image.
Launched on December 19, 1999, STS-103 lasted seven days, returning December 27. The crew included five Americans joined by mission specialists from France and Switzerland (the first astronaut from that country). The main objective of the mission was to service the Hubble Space Telescope. Four spacewalks were taken to perform the necessary service. The mission had originally been scheduled for the following June, but three of the telescope’s gyroscopes had failed, so the mission was moved to December 1999, making it the final Space Shuttle mission of the century.
