STS-104 was launched on July 12, 2001, and returned to Earth on July 25 after flying over five million miles.  The primary objective of the mission was the installation of the Quest Joint Airlock.  After installation, this became the path that American astronauts used for spacewalks.  Three spacewalks took place during the mission to install the Quest.
