STS-109 was launched on March 1, 2002, and returned March 12.  The focus of the mission was servicing the Hubble Space Telescope.  The crew installed new scientific equipment, solar arrays, a Power Control Unit, and a cooler for the infrared camera.  During the five spacewalks, the crew was in space for almost 36 hours. This was the last successful mission for the space shuttle Columbia.  The spacecraft disintegrated during reentry on its next flight in early 2003.
