Own Limited-Edition Atlantis STS-81 Coin Cover

Produced by Colorano, this set cover honors the lift off of the Space Shuttle Atlantis’ 18^th mission, STS-81 (the 81st mission of the Space Shuttle program).

This Colorano coin cover features a “silk” cachet that is produced through a special screening process and then bonded to the envelope.  The cachet pictures a photo of the launch and is surrounded by a golden border.  The cover bears a patriotic US stamp and launch date cancellation. 
The commemorative coin that is part of this cover is made of solid bronze.  It displays the mission’s crew patch.  The “V” shape represents the Roman numeral 5, marking the fifth Shuttle mission to the Mir space station.

Launched on January 12, 1997, STS-81 was the fifth mission to the Mir Space Station and the second to involve an exchange of US astronauts.  The mission also included the transfer of 5,970 pounds of supplies between Atlantis and Mir, the largest such transfer to date.  Additionally, Atlantis brought the first plants to complete a life cycle in space back to earth.
