This cover honors the launch and return of the Space Shuttle Columbia’s 22nd mission, STS-83 (the 83th mission of the Space Shuttle program).

The cachet pictures the mission patch.  The cover bears US stamps issued to commemorate the Pacific ’97 international stamp show and cancellations marking the start and finish of the mission.  

Launched on April 4, 1997, STS-83 carried the Microgravity Science Laboratory, an international collaborative designed to study the effects of microgravity.  The mission was supposed to last for more than 15 days but was cut short due to a Fuel Cell problem.  The Columbia landed successfully on April 8.
