U.N.T.E.A. was created to mediate a dispute between Indonesia and the Netherlands. Indonesia had been a Dutch colony before it was occupied by Japan during World War II. The Dutch wanted to regain control after the war but Indonesia demanded independence. U.N.T.E.A. administered the territory for eight months, from October 1962 until May 1963, when Indonesia became self-governing.
