The Economic and Social Council works to encourage higher standards of living, better health, cultural and educational cooperation among nations, and observance of human rights. The Council also recommends to the General Assembly the economic and social projects it considers worthy of U.N. support. The Assembly may then grant funds for these projects. The Council also cooperates with more than 100 other organizations throughout the world, including the Red Cross and labor unions.
