In September of 1982, the United Nations issued its third group of sixteen flag stamps. Among those honored are Austria, Malaysia, Seychelles, Ireland, Mozambique, Albania, Dominica, and Solomon Islands.
The Austrian flag has an interesting tale to tell concerning its colors. Legend has it that Duke Leopold V, after fighting a battle during the Third Crusade (1191), found his garments covered in blood. Removing his cloak, he discovered his belt had prevented the blood from soaking through. The effect of this white band upon the red cloth was great. Leopold began using a red flag with a white stripe as his standard. In 1919, the Duke’s flag, created centuries before, became the proud flag of Austria.
Malaysia’s flag has a star with fourteen points. Each point, as well as each of the fourteen stripes on the flag, stands for one of the country’s original states.
