Universal Declaration of Human Rights 40th Anniversary

On December 10, 1948, the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.  Following this historic act, the Assembly called upon all member countries to publicize the text of the Declaration.  Since 1948, Human Rights Day has been commemorated every year on December 10th.

On the 40th anniversary in 1988, the text of the preamble of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was printed in full on the souvenir sheets issued by each office.  Each sheet is printed in the language used at the offices it represents.

With the exception of the pursuit of peace, there is no cause the U.N. pursues more closely than the cause of human rights.  The Declaration consists of a preamble and thirty articles setting forth the human rights and fundamental freedoms to which all men and women, everywhere, are entitled without discrimination.
