In 2001, the United Nations set out an 8-step plan called the Millennium Development Goals designed to improve conditions in impoverished countries.  The program is designed to run through 2015 and set specific goals in eight different categories, such as reducing child mortality and reducing or eliminating extreme poverty and hunger.

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called for a 2010 meeting at the highest levels (including heads of state) to review the progress.  “Time is short. We must seize this historic moment to act responsibly and decisively for the common good,” Ki-moon said.  The Secretary noted there have been successes, but more progress needs to be made to achieve the goals by the target deadline.  The U.N. shares strategies for achieving the goals, and monitors and reports progress.
