Since 1957, soon after the launching of the first artificial satellite, the United Nations has worked to ensure that space is used for peaceful purposes and that the benefits from space activities are shared by all nations. The United Nations and other space organizations have designated 1992 as International Space Year (I.S.Y.) With the growing realization that there is a lack of data, knowledge, and understanding of what is happening to our fragile Earth, Mission to Planet Earth has been given primary importance on the world’s environmental-science agenda.
