Endangered Species:   “Recognizing that wild fauna and flora in their many beautiful and varied forms are an irreplaceable part of the natural systems of the earth which must be protected for this and the generations to come...” This statement from the preamble to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) summarizes the spirit of this important international agreement.

Recognizing that unrestricted commercial exploitation of wild animals and plants is the second major threat to endangered species, after destruction of habitat, 134 countries have signed CITES.

A 12-stamp set, issued in se-tenant block of four for each office of the United Nations, was the fifth installment in the multi-year Endangered Species series.

The F.s.0,80 Geneva stamps feature the polar bear, blue-crowned pigeon, marine iguana, and guanaco.
