2001 International Year of Volunteers

The set of six commemorative stamps, “International Year of Volunteers,” display art from “One Heart, One World – International Exhibition of the Heart,” which opened at UN Headquarters in New York on April 5, 2000. The Exhibition consisted of 100 poems by people with disabilities and 100 works of art corresponding to each of the poems. 

Each stamp features an artist’s interpretation of a poem by a countryman. The 34¢ stamp shows a painting by Jose Zaragoza for the poem, “Weather,” by Fabrizzio de Francesco – both artists are Brazilians; the 80¢ stamp design is by Australian John Terry, inspired by Katharine Annear’s poem, “The Electric Dance”; Frenchman Ernest Pignon-Ernest’s drawing on the F.S. 0,90 stamp corresponds to Michèle Delmond-Gaudard’s poem, “Ignored Olympiads”; the F.S. 1,30 stamp shows the painting by Paul Siché of France for Simone-Amélie Boinot’s “Poetry, my sweetness...”; an oil painting by Nguyen Thanh Chuong of Viet Nam on the S10 stamp represents Tran Quoc Minh’s poem, “Bridges”; and the S12 stamp features the interpretation of Ikko Tanaka from Japan of poet Shiho Ogasawara’s work, “Hands.”
