The Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) is a major part of the IOC’s manner of monitoring oceans.  GOOS is a system of programs used to predict weather and climate, monitor the state of the oceans, and protect life both in the oceans and on the coasts.

Through GOOS, the IOC provides a platform for international cooperation among researchers and the exchange of information.  A governing committee (called I-GOOS) provides direction and support for member nations for sustainability of ocean resources.
