Stamp Honors Founder of Modern Nursing

On May 12, 2020, the Vienna office of the United Nations issued a stamp commemorating the 200th birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale (1820-1910).  The stamp includes a portrait of Nightingale, as well as a quote written in German.  The English translation of the quote is, “Live life when you have it. Life is a splendid gift — there is nothing small about it.”  The stamp was also issued to raise awareness of the World Health Organization’s designation of 2020 as the International Year of the Nurse.

During the Crimean War of 1853-56, Nightingale revolutionized care for wounded soldiers, leading to an increase in their survival.  She became known as “The Lady with the Lamp” because of her night rounds through the hospital wards.  Her methods were later adopted by institutions around the world, and led to reforms in health care and a greater respect for nurses.
