1864 Great Central Fair Sanitary Commission Proof
This remarkable proof comes from the patriotic fundraising efforts of the U.S. Sanitary Commission during the Civil War. To raise money for the care of Union soldiers, the Commission held large expositions known as Sanitary Fairs, where local organizers issued their own souvenir “postage” stamps. Though not valid for mail, these charity issues carried deep symbolic value and helped rally public support.
The design features a bold American eagle with shield, clutching arrows and olive branches, framed by the inscription “Great Central Fair Postage Stamp – U.S. Sanitary Commission.” Struck as a large die proof on card, it shows generous margins and crisp detail. Color varies, as proofs were often produced in multiple shades for presentation and testing purposes.
Sanitary Fair proofs are scarce survivors from a pivotal moment in U.S. history. They connect collectors directly to the home-front efforts that supported Union soldiers and stand as cherished artifacts of the Civil War era.
A rare opportunity to add an authentic piece of Sanitary Fair history to your collection.
