1928 Commemorative Stamp Highlights:
• 2¢ and 5¢ Discovery of Hawaii:  Set includes two 2¢ stamps issued in recognition of Hawaii’s sesquicentennial.  These stamps are overprinted versions of the Regular Series of 1922-26.  They were issued to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the discovery of the Hawaiian Islands in 1788. They weren’t issued outside Hawaii, which was a territory at that point.

• 2¢ Valley Forge and 2¢ Battle of Monmouth:  Two other stamps in this set picture George Washington, including U.S. #646, which is overprinted “Molly Pitcher.”  This stamp was issued to honor the heroine of the Battle of Monmouth.  Mary “Molly” Ludwig was the wife of an infantry sergeant.  According to tradition, she carried pitchers of water to wounded soldiers during the battle, causing her to be nicknamed “Molly Pitcher.”  When her husband was wounded during the conflict, Molly took his place at the canon and fought for the rest of the battle.

• 2¢ Wright Airplane and 5¢ Globe and Plane:  Issued in conjunction with the International Civil Aeronautics Conference, which recognized the coming importance of airplane transportation to the world.
