Own a Wells Fargo Newspaper Stamp – A Rarely Seen Piece of History
Wells Fargo & Co. was the largest express company in the West. At a time when delivering mail in the undeveloped states of the western US was difficult, this company took on the challenge. In addition to its famous Pony Express routes and stamps, Wells Fargo also issued stamps to prepay the fee for delivering newspapers along their routes. This stamp would have covered the cost of sending a single newspaper.
Stamp #143LP7 was printed on white paper and issued with perforations measuring 11, 12, or 12 1/2. The design consisted of an oval inside a square border. Floral ornaments are along the sides of the oval and decorative scroll work fills the corners. The company's initials (W.F. & Co) and PAID were added to the lower corners.
