Why the stamp was issued: According to the USPS, this stamp (along with the others in the Waterfalls set) were issued to celebrate “the variety and beauty of American waterfalls.”
About the stamp design: This stamp pictures an existing photograph of Upper Falls in North Carolina along with its name and the state it’s located in (text is below the image).
First Day City: Issued in Yellowstone National Park, appropriate considering one of the stamps pictures a major waterfall in the park.
About the Waterfalls set: The USPS issued the 2023 Waterfalls set to showcase a small handful of the 17,000 documented waterfalls in America. Each one has something special about it that draws visitors from all walks of life to witness its natural beauty and power. These stamps include small, lesser-known waterfalls like Sunbeam Falls in Washington State as well as huge, worldwide attractions like Niagara Falls in New York.
Here's a complete list of the waterfalls pictured in the set:
a) Deer Creek Falls, Arizona
b) Nevada Falls, California
c) Harrison Falls, Pennsylvania
d) Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River, Wyoming
e) Waimoku Falls, Hawaii
f) Stewart Falls, Utah
g) Niagara Falls, New York
h) Dark Hollow Falls, Virginia
i) Grotto Falls, Tennessee
j) Sunbeam Falls, Washington
k) LaSalle Canyon Falls, Illinois
l) Upper Falls, North Carolina
History the stamp represents: The Blue Ridge Parkway between Virginia and North Carolina is America’s longest linear national park. It stretches 469 miles and connects Shenandoah National Park to Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
One noteworthy stop along this route is at mile marker 339.5 near Little Switzerland, North Carolina. This parking lot is the starting point of an approximately mile-long trail leading to Crabtree Falls (sometimes called Upper Falls). This waterfall is thought to have been named after William Crabtree, who settled in the area in 1777. The hike to the waterfall is moderately challenging due to the increase in elevation. The trail is surrounded by lush forest dotted with mountain laurel, rhododendron, and other wildflowers. There are also a few sets of rustic stone stairs, adding a charm of their own to the trip.
Before long, Crabtree Falls comes into view. It has a wooden bridge at its base which makes for the perfect spot to take photographs. At 70 feet tall, Crabtree Falls is the highest vertical-drop cascading waterfall east of the Mississippi River. It is especially impressive after heavy rainfall. Autumn is also a great time to visit with the additional beauty of colorful leaves, but, in reality, there is no bad time to visit.
