A 1942 Army photograph was chosen as the design for the stamp celebrating the Alaska Highway's 50th anniversary. Construction on this 1,500-mile highway was begun in March 1942 and ended in November that same year. During World War II, it served as the principal route for connecting Army bases in Alaska with the continental U.S.
