Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist and playwright Edna Ferber (1885-1968) was called "the greatest American woman novelist of her day." Ferber began her career in journalism. As a teenager reporter, she once interviewed Harry Houdini for her hometown newspaper. Ferber went on to make her mark in fictional literature. One of her novels, Giant (1952), was made into a Hollywood movie starring Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, and James Dean. Another, Showboat (1926), became a popular Broadway musical comedy. The Edna Ferber stamp was issued to pay the 2002 first-class rate for letters weighing under 3 ounces.
