Why the stamp was issued:  The stamp was issued to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Spanish-American War.  The explosion of the USS Maine in Havana Harbor led the US to declare war on Spain.

About the stamp design:  USPS art director Richard Sheaff created the design showing the Maine steaming through ocean waters.  The red frame contains the phrase “Remember the Maine,” which became a rallying cry during the war.

Special design details:  The ship was printed using offset lithography, while the red frame was engraved.

First Day City:  The First Day ceremony was held at Fort Taylor in Key West, Florida, the closest city to Cuba.  The ceremony was part of the US Battleship Maine Centennial Commission’s weekend festivities.

History the stamp represents:  In 1898, after years of harsh rule, the Spanish colony of Cuba was embroiled in a struggle for independence.  As least 100,000 people had died due to Spain’s crackdown on Cuban guerrillas.  In addition to hunger relief efforts, the US sent the USS Maine to Cuba to represent American interests.
On February 15, 1898, the Maine mysteriously exploded while moored in Havana harbor.  Of the ship’s crew of 354, only 88 survived.  Although the cause of the explosion has never been conclusively proven, the American press blamed a Spanish mine, popularizing the slogan, “Remember the Maine. To hell with Spain!”  Two months after the sinking of the battleship, the US declared war on Spain.
It took the US less than a year to win the Spanish-American War.  Among the heroes to emerge from the conflict were Theodore Roosevelt and the “Rough Riders.”  Roosevelt’s fame later helped him to become president.
